About this event:
WHAT: The Obama Presidential Center will be built just blocks from the Hyde Park Art Center. The Presidential Library Project: Black Presidential Imaginary highlights both the racist and hopeful history of imagining a black president through art and archives.
SO WHAT: Addressing the long history of representing a black president in visual culture, both comedic and aspirational, the exhibition presents visual art, performance, architecture, and discussions that propose a multi-narrative foundation for the future Obama Presidential Center. Objects from the Obama in Africa collection from the Herskovits Library at Northwestern University will be shown to the public for the first time. This collection includes souvenirs, crafts, artworks, commercial products, and political ephemera from 31 countries that express the political opportunism, global enthusiasm and pride associated with President Obama.
NOW WHAT: Admission is free for this wonderful exhibition. Hours are Monday – Thursday, 9am to 8pm; Friday & Saturday, 9am to 5pm; and Sunday, Noon – 5pm.
