Ah, Valentine’s Day. It may have already passed but its residual effects are still kicking. No matter how you feel about the day, and there are plenty of feelings surrounding that day that are the antithesis of love, it’s impossible to avoid it. So instead of willfully ignoring the day, I’m embracing it all for this mixtape. Much like how I see the day itself, this week’s playlist is an opportunity and not an obligation to put together these sorts of songs and make a playlist that revolves on the complexities of love. So whether you’re all in it, you’re currently out of it, or are so beyond it and just trying to make sense of it all, this mixtape is for you.
I’d recommend letting this one play all the way through rather than shuffling it. Its bookends are different versions of the Hundred Waters “Show Me Love” and they do a good job of representing the sound of the songs between them.
Coincidentally (not actually though), a lot of the artists featured on this week’s mixtape will be in Chicago in the coming weeks. Sinkane, Thundercat (unsurprisingly sold out), Lee Fields and the Expressions, Allison Crutchfield, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Of Montreal, and Mac Demarco (even more unsurprisingly sold out) all have shows coming up. So take a seat, listen to this mixtape, and get inspired to see some shows.
