Your 3CR Guide to Record Store Day 2017

We're quickly approaching that time of year when record shops get ready for one of the biggest vinyl related days of the year. That's right folks, it's the about to be the third Saturday in April which is Record Store Day, the worldwide event that brings record store staff, customers, and artists together for a day of vinyl goodness! RSD means a plethora of exclusive releases, giveaways, and in store performances to celebrate the music community. This is the 10th Record Store Day and the past decade has definitely had it's ups and downs, from humble beginnings to ridiculous exclusives with flippers buying the rarest only to resell. The criticisms of the day are valid, but you don't have to succumb and be a part of them. RSD is supposed to be about celebrating with friends (new and old) the beauty of music and the wax it's pressed on. While you're lined up waiting to pick out you vinyl treasure, strike up a conversation with the people around you and start developing that sense of community that RSD strives to achieve! Listed below are some of the great stores that will be having events this Saturday, April 22nd. Peruse the lists below to plan out the best day in vinyl aficionados' year. The first batch are shops and venues that are celebrating the vinyl holiday in their own way. You may not find the exclusive Record Store Day releases, but you will have a great time! After the RSD alternatives are pledge stores that will be raising the vinyl flag proudly! Check out some good bands and DJs, have a few free drinks, and of course pick up some vinyl! Bloodshot Records - 3039 W Irving Park Road This year Bloodshot's Chicago HQ storefront pop-up shop will be open between noon and 6pm to act as an oasis in the RSD chaos! This will be the spot to relax and enjoy some free refreshments and maybe even some snacks inbetween your RSD stops. Bloodshot will have some unique items, test pressings, signed item, out-of-print albums, their regular releases, and more. So sit back and enjoy some of their Dark Matter Bloodshot Over the Cliff coffee while wearing an Alt-Country; Not Alt-Facts t-shirt! Cafe Mustache - 2313 N Milwaukee Ave. -  @cafemustache No RSD exclusives, but they will be holding the Permanent Records DJs After Party at 9pm! Empty Bottle - 1035 N. Western Ave. - 773-276-3600 - @theemptybottle Empty Bottle will be doing Record Store Day big with their 3rd Annual Hand Over Fist Release Party and Record Store Day Showcase. The beer, Hand Over Fist, is a collaboration between the venue, Reckless Records, and Revolution Brewing to brew a beer in celebration of Record Store Day! Doors open at noon and at 12:30pm the Intersectional Feminism Music Panel presented by The Inclusive Music Coalition will begin. Then you can stick around for some tunes from DJ Jill Hopkins and two great local bands, So Pretty and Oops! Numero Group Pop Up @ Comfort Station - 2579 N Milwaukee Ave - @numerogroup Numero Group will be continuing a seven year Record Store Day tradition but taking over Logan Square’s Comfort Station for a pop up shop! Starting at 10am, the amazing record label will be selling their catalog and deeply discounted prices! Honestly, this is a great way to diversify you collection with some lost and hidden gems. PBR Record Store Day @ Boiler Room - 2210 N California Ave. Celebrate RSD with something a little different! From noon to 4pm you'll be able to enjoy some of Boiler Room's pizza brunch and then partake in the Feeltrip Records Pop-Up Record Store! There will also some live acoustic sets by Matthew Alfano & Michael Vinopal, The Shades and A Friend Called Fire. RSVP here for a hosted PBR! Secret Agent Supply Co. - 1276 N Milwaukee Ave. - @AgentSupply The Secrect Agent Supply Co. will be taking part in the Record Store Day celebration with a pair of music related signings! Head over to this cool little shop and meet editor of "The Empty Bottle Chicago" John Dugan from 10am - 11am and then from 1pm to 3pm you can mett Steve Krakow, author of "My Kind of Sound: The Secret History of Chicago Music! RSD PLEDGED STORES! 606 Records - 1808 S. Allport - 312-585-6108 - @606records 606 Records will open at 10am and will celebrate the day with an all-female lineup of DJ's spinning vinyl sets from open to close! They will have RSD exclusive titles, good vibes, and giveaways available throughout the day. A portion of our proceeds will go to benefit Yollocalli Arts Reach. DJs will include

Algonquin Records - 532 E Algonquin Rd, Des Plaines, IL - (847) 827-0673 Algonquin Records will open their doors to the RSD crowd at 10:30am. Audio Archaeology  - 1324 W Devon Ave. - 773-856-3472 Audio Archaeology will be open from 8am to 8pm for RSD goodness. Beverly Records - 11612 S. Western Ave. - 773-779-0066 - @BeverlyRecords Beverly Records will be enjoying RSD in two fun ways. The store itself will open at 8am and will have the exclusive RSD releases and 20% off used vinyl. Then at 11am, Beverly Records will take over Cullinan's Stadium Club, the tavern right next door, for a Vinyl Fair where LPs will be on sale for $2.00 and 45s will be a quarter a piece. There will also be live music at 1pm! Borderline - 5351 N. Clark St. - 773-728-6582 Record Store Day for Borderline starts bright and early at 9am. They'll be playing great tunes in store and be offering 25% off all used vinyl/cassettes/cds! Bric-A-Brac Records & Collectibles - 3156 W Diversey Ave - 773-654-3915 - @bricabracrcords Bric-A-Brac will start things up at 8am to take part in the 10th anniversary of RSD with some style! Bands will be playing all afternoon as usual and they'll have some tasty treats like free coffee from Halfwit Roasters, free donuts from the Donut Vault, and vegan pastries from Ash Lemasters! Bric-A-Brac will be partnering with their awesome neighbors Lost Lake, who will be opening at noon, hosting live DJs all day, and offering the RSD exclusive beverage: the Bric-a-Braquiri! Bucket O' Blood Books and Records - 3182 N Elston Ave. - 312.890.3860 - @bucketoblood Bucket O' Blood, which will open at 10am, usually turns their RSD into an awesome themed party and this year is no different. The RSD Luau Extravaganza will feature tropical drinks that will keep things festive throughout the day and everyone buying RSD releases will get a special themed shot! Come dressed in your finest Hawaiian shirt or coconut bra as there will be a limbo competition and a hula hoop contest to determine sale prices. They have also partnered up with a few local business for an interesting game with very cool prizes including a Great Lakes Brewing Turntable! Check their event page for more info! Cheap Kiss Records - 22 S. Villa Ave. Villa Park, IL - 847-414-9765 Store will open up at 9:00am for your RSD needs! Dave's Records - 2604 N. Clark St. - 773-929-6325 - @davesrecordschi Dave's will open up around 11, but he usually opens up quite earlier than the usual announced time, making for a nice long line. Previous years, the first people in line arrived at 10pm the evening before RSD. This year Dave's will have a live musical performance! Stonebelly will be stopping by for an acoustic set at 3pm. So arrive early, get one of the exclusive posters that the store gets made for RSD, and don't forget Dave's Rules of the Road. Dusty Groove Records - 1120 N. Ashland Ave. - 773-342-5800 - @DustyGroove Dusty Groove's Record Store Day will run from 8am to 9pm and feature some magic in the afternoon, giveaways, refreshments and a chance to spin the wheel of fortune with every purchase. Gramaphone Records - 2843 N. Clark St. - 773-472-3683 @gramaphonechi RSD 2017 will start at noon or Gramaphone records! Inaddtion to some select RSD titles, Gramophone will be hosting release parties for two exclusive titles. Mr. White's new Memphis based label, Edgewood Estate and new Chicago imprint "Night Sea Journey" have prepared limited Gramaphone editions of their 12"s.  There will also be in-store performances by NSJ crew, Mr. White, Gphone staffers Groovin' High - 1047 W. Belmont Ave. - 773-476-6846 The one time of year that Groovin' High is definitely open is on Record Store Day so don't miss out on this pretty great shop. Front Street, Wheaton -  630-474-4954 - @mile_long Mile Long Records will be opening its doors to the Record Store Day masses at 10am but will be handing out wristbands a little earlier. Check their Facebook page event for update info! Permanent Records - 1914 W. Chicago Ave. - 773-278-1744 - @PermanentRex Permanent Records is opening at 10am for a full day of events! They'll obviously be carrying many RSD exclusives and releasing their own exclusive release of Frankie and the Witch Fingers' "Sidewalk" LP (Limited to 500 copies total - 150 on colored vinyl). Dark Matter Coffee will be supplying free coffee first thing in the morning and then Half Acre Beer Company will tap a keg at 1pm to supply free beverages for all (21+) until it runs out!
