TCR Mixtape No. 33: Kalamazoo Weekend

This mixtape was composed in tandem by Colin Smith and Emma Terhaar. Can two people work together to make one playlist? Has the broth been spoiled? Please let us know if listening to this playlist makes you think of spoilt broth by commenting below. This week's mixtape features music from artists playing at the Audiotree Music Festival in Kalamazoo, Michigan, this weekend. Audiotree is the source of all those great live music sets on YouTube — the ones that feature some of tomorrow’s next big artists. The videos are longer than the Tiny Desk concerts and have a bigger catalogue than KEXP. But Audiotree does so much more. In addition to the live recordings, they do production, management and promotion, they own a few of the most popular venues in Chicago, Lincoln Hall and Schubas, and they run a music festival in the owners’ hometown, Kalamazoo, Michigan. Because of their wide range of work—and thus their vast connections with music artists—this year’s festival line-up includes regulars from their venues, plenty of local Chicago and Midwest acts, and even some of the most exciting bands from around the world (Australia’s own King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, anyone?). For its fifth year anniversary, the Audiotree Music Festival is expanding to the Arcadia Creek Festival Place in the heart of Kalamazoo, Michigan — a short walk from the city’s landmarks like Bell’s Brewery. The festival will take place on September 22nd and 23rd, and the packed line-up includes the likes of Twin Peaks, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, SuperDuperKyle, Noname, BADBADNOTGOOD, Hoops, Pinegrove, and others. Audiotree’s giving us a great excuse to get out of the city to enjoy a classic Midwestern fall weekend: drinking craft beers while seeing Twin Peaks’ Cadien Lake James swivel his head unnaturally as he’s nailing each guitar riff and solo. As we drive out to Kalamazoo for the weekend, we’ll be listening to this playlist of songs we can’t wait to hear live.
