Chicago Area Could See More Than 1 Foot of Snow Throughout the Weekend
Chicagoans hunkered down Thursday night and weathered a rough commute Friday morning as more than 5 inches of snow fell in the area overnight, with larger amounts falling in some surrounding suburbs and collar counties. "Our city is tackling the first major snow storm we have seen in several years - and it's clear that Chicagoans are rising to the challenge," said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. "I ask everyone to keep exercising good judgment and remain indoors if at all possible, to take the warnings and advisories seriously, and to check on the well-being of family, friends and neighbors." A winter storm warning is in effect until at least 6:00 PM Friday evening for Northeastern Illinois and parts of Northwest Indiana, with an additional accumulation of between 2 and 4 inches, and even more snow expected throughout the weekend. Hundreds of schools and offices were closed Friday morning, along with several museums. Chicago Public Library and Chicago Park District facilities will remain open normal hours. (ABC7)
