University of Chicago Officer Shoots Man Suspected of Breaking Windows, Damaging Vehicles

A University of Chicago police officer shot an seriously wounded a man late Tuesday night just a few blocks north of the school’s Hyde Park campus. Witnesses allege the man was walking up and down the street with a pipe or some type of metal pole, banging on vehicles and doors and cursing. At least one person who called the police alleged the man was trying to break into their apartment. Glass on multiple apartment doors was reportedly damaged, along with at least one vehicle. Police intercepted the man in an alley between Kimbark and Woodlawn, where officers allegedly asked him to drop the object, followed by one officer shooting the man in the shoulder. “The individual [who was shot] has been transported to Northwestern Hospital in serious condition,” the university said in a statement. “[The] Chicago Police Department will be investigating the incident. In addition, the University Department of Safety and Security will conduct an administrative investigation of the incident. The officer has been placed on mandatory administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.” (WGN) (CBS2)
