Chicago Tribune Workers Win Their Union

Chicago Tribune journalists pushing to unionize won a victory Sunday night when parent company Tronc recognized the Chicago Tribune Guild. “Our attorneys and partners at The NewsGuild-Communications Workers of America tell us that in decades of organizing, they have never seen a newsroom earn voluntary recognition from a company of this size and with such a long history of anti-union bias,” read a letter from the guild. “Tronc undoubtedly realized it would waste time and money during an election process it would lose.” The Guild says its now in a “‘status quo’ period,” which means that Tronc can’t alter working conditions unilaterally without first negotiating with its bargaining units. The Guild says that 85 percent of its newsrooms signed cards wanting their interests represented by a union. (Chicago Tribune Guild)
