Review: Propane! Propane!, Fashion Week, and Eye Flys Bring the Noise to Reggies Music Joint
I'm a big fan of fast, hardcore music, but sometimes you need to slow it down, and sludge metal and noise rock really are the pinnacle. Distorted guitars, nihilistic vocals, it's all there and it's all good. Propane! Propane!, Fashion Week, and Eye Flys really brought their A game at Reggies Music Joint on August 8.
First on stage was Propane! Propane!, from right here in Chicago. With Yarrison Mad Mad Mad Mad Earth on guitar and vocals, and Garrison Madman Madman Murderous Garrison on drums and vocals (these are the names I got from THEIR Facebook page, so don't look at me weird), they put on a crazy energetic set, especially for only being a two-man act. Describing themselves as "Power Awesome"—which, honestly, is a really good description—it was just a constant onslaught of aggression and I loved every second of it. If you're looking for some local aggressive metal, look no further than Propane! Propane!
Next on stage was Fashion Week, hailing from New York City. With a sound that mixes noise rock, metal, and grunge, you could get death growls and ultra-aggressive guitars one moment and sorrowful singing and melodic chords the next, making every song have its own different mood. If you're thinking of listening to their music, I'd highly suggest "Heroin Chic" or "God Save McQueen," as they each give a taste of Fashion Week's various musical styles.
Last on stage was Eye Flys. With members from throughout the East Coast, they brought a combination of noise rock and sludge metal that draws inspiration from bands like the Melvins. The front runners of the show, they were also the largest, and with that came some incredibly intense music. It was like getting hit with a shockwave. Their last song in particular, "Fuckface," puts the sights on toxic masculinity, and it really hits home.
There was one problem with this concert, and it affected all of the acts: I couldn't understand any of the lyrics anyone was singing. Whether it was because of the small size of the Music Joint or because the vocals weren't as loud as the instruments, I don't know, but I can probably count on both hands how many words I could actually understand. This isn't a dig at the bands, because I listened to their music before the concert and I could clearly understand the lyrics in all cases, so this was most likely on Reggies. Even so, I still had a hell of a time with these three bands, and if you get the chance to see them live, leap at that chance. You won't regret it.
