Review: Dream Pop Duo Sports Are No Ordinary Men

Dream-pop duo Sports made their much anticipated return to Lincoln Hall with nothing short of a mesmerizing set last Thursday. It seems like forever ago that the band announced they were working on their latest record, Get A Good Look, in the cloudy days of 2020 and it has finally made its way to their very patient fanbase. Let me just say it was most definitely worth the wait for both the album and a tour to accompany it. Sports has never fallen short of putting on an electrifying show and that’s just what they did this time around.

The duo opened with their heavy hitting “Ordinary Man,” creating an energetic ambiance and the bass instantly seeping through everyone’s body. Lead singer Cale made it very clear that he indeed is no ordinary man with his shirtless fur coat look and confidence wearing it; he charmed his adoring audience almost instantly. Sports performed every song with such high energy and emotion, it almost felt theatrical! They of course also performed their title track “Get a Good Look” which was what I was looking forward to the most!

As if their animated performance wasn’t enough, their stage lighting has always been something to look forward to at their shows. This time around they traded in their sparkly sequence cowboy aesthetic for a more night in the woods look. The beauty of their stage setup didn’t have to beg to have everyone pull out their phone to snap a photo or two of their new setup as the lights shone through the foliage, reflecting off the mirrors and chandeliers with a beautiful luster.

It can be argued that Get a Good Look is their best work yet. It’s both mysterious and euphoric; all while still staying true to their signature Sports sound. Cale and Christian left the crowd energized all while wanting more. They have such high potential to make it huge in the music world but for whatever reason they seem to be slept on by many people! Fortunately I’ll just keep enjoying the treasure that is Sports as well as watching them grow as artists.
