The Thing: The Hash Brown Sandwich at Evette’s Chicago

About a month ago a friend of mine texted me and suggested we go to Evette’s Chicago for breakfast. It was a dreary November Sunday, one of the first really cold days this fall. I rolled out of bed, threw on some comfy clothes, and made my way over to the restaurant.

This was my first time going to Evette’s. I had looked up a few pictures of the spot when my friend had suggested it, but I was still surprised by the size of the place. It’s quite small, but in a cozy, quaint way. The only drawback to the restaurant being so intimate is that if my friend had not arrived before me, we wouldn’t have been able to sit, although we were trying to snag a table on a busy Sunday at 11 am. If you were to go on a weekday or earlier or later on a weekend day, I have faith a table will be available.

Upon greeting my friend, I immediately noticed the delectable aroma in the room. I immediately asked her what she got for herself, and she mentioned the Hash Brown Sandwich, which is one of Evette's specialty items, composed of two over-hard eggs, chipotle mayo, chimichurri, American cheese, and an optional protein, all sandwiched between two waffle hash browns.

We sat at a high-top table and got to work on our sandwiches, carefully separating the tinfoil from them. When I say this is one of the best blends of tastes to enter my mouth, especially in the last year, I’m not kidding. To be fair, everything in this sandwich is right up my alley. I love eggs, sausage, American cheese, and one of my favorite condiments is chipotle mayo. The two hash browns are an excellent decision, crispy and extremely flavorful. I went back this past week for my second tasting, and they didn’t have sausage, so I got bacon. And even though I’m not the biggest fan of bacon in sandwiches, I enjoyed the sandwich just as much as I did the first time.

Now, while I might have greatly enjoyed this meal, it may not be for everyone. Two things that really stuck out to me were that the sandwich is quite salty and the hash browns are a bit greasy. I didn’t mind either of those qualities since I love treating myself to dishes like this, and I also put salt on everything I eat. But if someone does not resonate with my sentiments, then I would recommend looking at some of the other dishes. I should also put this warning out: The hash browns fall apart very easily, so definitely don’t plan to eat this without easy access to somewhere where you can wash your hands.

Evette’s Chicago is located at 350 W Armitage Ave. Hours are Tuesday 10am -2pm, Wednesday-Sunday 10am-8pm. It is a Lincoln Park jewel that brings together Lebanon’s Mediterranean cuisine and Mexico’s rich and decadent flavors. Their brunch menu is available from 10 am to 2 pm. Between their lunch/dinner and brunch menus, the restaurant offers patrons a plethora of options, ranging from pita dishes to salads to tacos and more.
