You have definitely been to one of 4 Entertainment Groups (4EG) bars, probably more than once since they thrive on making a space that feels lived in, welcoming, and a true part of the neighborhood. They are responsible for places like The Getaway in Lincoln Square, Easy Bar and Remedy in Wicker Park and The Owl in Logan Square. Each space has its own personality, but there is a clear recipe for stick-around success with each place. A recipe that works since 4EG's spaces are celebrating milestone anniversaries like 30 years in business this year. I spoke with David Halpern, managing partner at 4EG about creating an identity with space, the real reason why people keep coming through the doors, and what is special about the bar business.

You have decades of bars under your belt, what is the secret to creating a space that stays?
We’ve always strived to build places that feel like they have been there forever. We aren’t flash in the pan or trend driven. We are the old reliable when there’s nothing else going on. A local spot with a great staff and an unpretentious vibe. We foster a space where there is a mutual love and respect between the staff and the guest.
From The Getaway to Easy to The Owl, each bar has its own identity. What goes into making sure each space fits the vibe of the neighborhood?
We look to open places in neighborhoods that we either live in or aspire to hang out in. Each bar having its own identity is something that we strive for. I love when guests say “oh, that’s one of your places too? That makes total sense!” So, they didn’t necessarily know that, for example, The Getaway in Lincoln Square is a sister bar to Easy Bar in Wicker Park, but when they hear it, it adds up. That’s because of the great staff and the vibe that all our places tend to have.
While each different bar has a different feel, there is something that connects them, each one feels like a place you can easily walk into and have a good time. How do you create a place people want to be?
I hate to be redundant, but the factors really are a well thought out design, a great staff, and an unpretentious vibe. We are driven by treating everyone as if they were your house guest. It’s Hospitality 101. I think our guests know that if they come to one of our bars, they will be treated well and have a great experience. It’s a testament to the great teams we have at each of our locations.
Bars are a unique place, you celebrate, mourn, forget, fall in love, connect. What was it about the bar business that made you not only open one but build a group?
I love when I hear someone say, “I met my wife or my husband at aliveOne or our first date was dancing at The Owl.” Those connections and seeing smiles on the faces of our guests and staff inspires me to build more and continue to grow. I also enjoy creating cool places for people to work and be part of great team.
