In time for dry January, Journeyman Distillery, located in both Indiana and Michigan, has collaborated with Chicago's Field Museum to create a new Zero Proof Field Gin. Released at both their tasting locations and soon to be available online, the Zero Proof Field Gin offers lovers of a good gin and tonic something less buzzy to sip on.
At both Journeyman Distillery locations, their restaurants are serving up the new N/A gin in multiple cocktail options. Sips include the Dirtless Martini with N/A Field Gin, olive juice and blue cheese olives, the N/A Lavender Gimlet with lavender simple syrup, lime and grapefruit juice, and the N/A Ramos Gin Fizz with lemon juice, soda and foamy egg white. Journeyman's Zero Proof Field Gin touts being an ideal bar cart addition for the sober or sober curious.
Journeyman first collaborated with Chicago's Field Museum in celebration of their 125th anniversary and crafted a gin, vodka, and rye. To honor the museum and Chicago’s history, Journeyman utilized botanicals that were introduced at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago – the same year the museum originated. Choosing from over 1,500 different plants and botanicals, all still currently housed at the museum and collected in 1893, Journeyman narrowed the list down to 27 to feature in their inspired classic gin.
The same list was used to create their new zero proof option. The first taste offers all the usual botanical gin flavors you are used to like juniper and cucumber, but as with most nonalcoholic booze options, the Field Gin rings a little sweet. The finish is a bit cloying if you prefer a zestier punch. The mouth feel does have that unique liquor viscosity to it though which is hard to achieve. It doesn't drink like a punched up water or juice, it coats the mouth but lacks the burn.
Ideal as an addition to a citrusy N/A cocktail that won't need sweetening or in a martini inspired by their Dirtless Martini, Journeyman's Zero Proof Field Gin gives lovers of Chicago's history and those who want to avoid a hangover something to sip on.
